Better governance can help us deal with terrorism

Taking a cue from the US-led operation at Abbottabad to track down and ultimately kill Osama bin Laden, former union minister Arun Shourie on Tuesday stated that India should try to build up the capacity to conduct such an action.

He said that such capability could be acquired only by improving governance and setting clear goals pertaining to fighting terrorism.

Shourie said, “There should not be third class governance to fight issues like terrorism. Autonomy should be given to the state to tackle such issues.”

He was speaking at a book release function organised in the city. He released the Marathi book 'Growing Up Bin Laden', a translation, written by Jean Sasson.

Shourie said that the US attack has shown that powerful countries can do what they want. He said, “India should keep in mind that no one else will do our work for us. The country should plan its own strategy to tackle terrorism, diplomacy and international forces. The country also needs to keep a close eye on China, which is emerging as a big power in Asia.”

He added that after the 9/11 attack, it took 10 years for the US to hunt down Osama bin Laden. It happened because the US set a goal. Shourie said that the Indian government took a lot of time to take decisions during the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack.

Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam and major general (retd) Shashikant Pitre were also present on the dais.
