‘US-type raid not feasible for India’

PUNE: The killing of Osama bin Laden may have enthused a section to urge that India too should carry out a similar operation against the most wanted terrorists holed up in Pakistan, experts have said such a move would be ill-advised.

Veteran journalist Arun Shourie is of the firm opinion that India does not have the capacity to carry out such operations. “We must first build up our capacity and only then think about eliminating the likes of Dawood Ibrahim on Pakistani soil,” Shourie said while talking on the subject “Why can we not do an Abbotabad?” here on Tuesday.

Shourie, special public prosecutor Ujwal Nikam and retired army officer Maj Gen Shashikant Pitre were expressing their views during a book release function held at the S M Joshi Hall here. The Marathi translation of the book “Growing Up bin Laden”, by American author Jean Sasson, was released at the hands of Shourie on the occasion.
Bal Bhagwat has translated the book in Marathi.

Shourie pointed out that building up appropriate capacity requires sustained perseverance, spanning over a few decades. The US Abbotabad operation, he pointed out, was a mission that America had planned and pursued over the decades.

Nikam, too, was of the opinion that India would be ill-advised to carry out an Abbotabad-like operation. Ridiculing a section of defence officers who have advocated such a move, Nikam said although in a democracy everyone has the freedom of speech, yet one should know when to talk and when to remain silent.
